Cameroon football legend Samuel Eto’o has vowed to support the vision of Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Dr. Patrice Motsepe after being elected to the CAF Executive Committee.
Eto’o, who will represent the Union of Central African Football Federations (UNIFFAC), said he is eager to contribute to the development of African football under Motsepe’s leadership.
“I am not elected as CAF president, but a member of the Executive Committee led by President Motsepe. What is certain is that, through his vision, I will always be ready to provide certain solutions,” Eto’o told TV5 Monde.
His election marks a significant personal victory after months of tensions with CAF that tried to prevent him from standing for the election unitl the CAS intervened and reinstated him
The FECAFOOT president had previously clashed with the organization over governance issues, but his appointment signals a fresh chapter in his football administration career.
‘A Dream Come True’
Reflecting on his election, Eto’o described it as a lifelong aspiration. “It’s a childhood dream. I always wanted to serve football, and I did it as a player in the stadiums. Then I entered football administration,” he said. “For any leader, the ambition is to serve at the CAF level. I thank all my peers who were willing to trust me.”
The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker also emphasized the sacrifices he had to make to secure this role. “I savour my victories much more because they are acquired at the cost of great sacrifices. Generally, when I have an idea that I find good for the majority, I go for it,” he added.
Eto’o’s Vision for African Football
Eto’o’s appointment comes at a time when CAF is pushing to elevate the continent’s football standards, with a focus on infrastructure, financial stability, and global competitiveness.
His role in the Executive Committee will allow him to influence policy while continuing his duties as president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT).
“There are many other football enthusiasts who want to see Africa reach a higher level,” he said.
“I am convinced that together, under the leadership of President Motsepe, we will succeed in moving African football forward.”
Eto’o’s presence in CAF’s leadership is expected to bring his extensive playing experience and administrative drive to the forefront of key decisions affecting African football.
His election also reinforces the growing influence of former players in football governance across the continent.
