Petros Mbingo, a seasoned assistant referee from Eswatini, has officially announced his retirement after a distinguished 16-year career in Eswatini and African refereeing. This announcement marks the departure of one of the most experienced referees in the country, making Mbingo the third Eswatini referee to retire in recent months.

Mbingo’s retirement comes less than a year after he returned his FIFA badge, signaling the end of his international refereeing journey.

He joins the ranks of other notable Eswatini referees like Letticia Viana and Sifiso Nxumalo, who both retired at the end of the last season.

At 42, Mbingo’s career has been marked by significant contributions to the sport, both nationally and internationally, since he became an international referee in 2007.

Petros Mbingo’s career as an assistant referee has been illustrious, spanning over a decade and a half.

He has officiated numerous high-stakes matches across the continent, earning a reputation for his fairness and professionalism.

His retirement leaves a void in the Eswatini refereeing community, where his experience and mentorship have been invaluable.

Reflecting on his career, Mbingo stated, “It has been an incredible journey. The experiences and lessons learned on the field are invaluable.

I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and the people I’ve worked with throughout my career.”

While Mbingo has not yet revealed his plans post-retirement, there is speculation that he might transition to a role as a match commissioner.

This would follow a common path for retired referees in Eswatini. Many of his predecessors, including Simanga Nhleko and Mbongiseni Fakudze, have successfully taken on such roles.

Nhleko even went on to become the CEO of the Eswatini Premier League (EPL).

The transition to a match commissioner role would allow Mbingo to continue contributing to the sport he has dedicated much of his life to, albeit from a different perspective.

His extensive experience and deep understanding of the game would undoubtedly make him an asset in this new capacity.

Mbingo’s retirement, alongside those of Viana and Nxumalo, signifies a generational shift within Eswatini refereeing.

The country’s football authorities will now look to nurture and develop the next generation of referees who can carry forward the legacy of professionalism and excellence exemplified by Mbingo and his peers.

There is no set retirement age for football referees, as the decision often hinges on personal health, life circumstances, and career satisfaction. Mbingo’s choice to retire at 42 reflects his personal decision to step away while still at the top of his game.

As Petros Mbingo steps away from active refereeing, his contributions to Eswatini and African football will be remembered and celebrated.

His career serves as an inspiration to aspiring referees in the region. Whether he chooses to become a match commissioner or pursues other interests, his legacy in Eswatini football is assured.

The football community will look forward to seeing how he continues to influence the sport in the years to come.
