Estelle Johnson bids farewell to international Football

Cameroon defender Estelle Johnson has announced her retirement from international football, bringing an end to a distinguished career with the Indomitable Lionesses.

The 36-year-old confirmed her decision in an emotional social media post on Sunday, March 9, expressing gratitude for the journey she shared with the national team.

A career defined by dedication

Johnson, born in Cameroon but raised in the United States, made her international debut in 2019, representing Cameroon at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

Her arrival bolstered the Lionesses’ defense, and she quickly became a vital figure in the squad.

Reflecting on her time with the team, she wrote:

“You welcomed me with open arms… Every message of support became a part of my soul. Representing Cameroon has been the greatest honour of my career.”

Her leadership and experience proved invaluable, particularly as the team navigated major tournaments and international fixtures.

A bittersweet conclusion

Despite a career filled with pride and accomplishment, Johnson’s final international campaign ended in disappointment.

Cameroon failed to qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal in the intercontinental playoffs.

Following that loss, Johnson shared her heartbreak on social media, hinting that it might be the end of her journey with the national team.

Now stepping away from international football, Johnson has not yet disclosed her future plans.

However, with her experience and leadership qualities, many believe she could transition into coaching, mentorship, or other roles within the sport.

A legacy of inspiration

As she departs the international stage, Johnson leaves behind a legacy of resilience, professionalism, and commitment.

Her presence in the Cameroonian squad inspired many young players, particularly those with dual heritage, proving that football can unite cultures and open doors to new opportunities.

Though her chapter with the Indomitable Lionesses has come to an end, Johnson’s contributions to the team will not be forgotten.

For now, she steps into a new phase of life, having left an indelible mark on African women’s football.
