Esperance de Tunis have opposed the Tunisian Professional League’s move to summon Algerian forward Youcef Belaïli for questioning over alleged inappropriate gestures in a recent league match against Chabiba El Omrane.
In a statement, Esperance criticized the league for basing its decision on television footage, arguing that this sets a troubling precedent.
The club pointed out that similar actions by players from other teams have not been scrutinized, suggesting inconsistency in the league’s disciplinary measures.
Esperance also accused the league of applying double standards that could influence the outcome of matches.
According to the club, disciplinary decisions should be made with fairness and not selectively enforced based on subjective interpretations.
Furthermore, the club expressed concern over the league’s voting process for such disciplinary actions.
Esperance believe these decisions often serve narrow interests rather than promoting fair competition. The club warned that this approach could undermine the credibility of the league and harm the integrity of the sport in Tunisia.
Esperance reaffirmed its opposition to what it sees as an unjust decision and vowed to support Belaïli against what it considers an unfair investigation.
Belaili is currently with Algeria preparing for their 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Botswana on March 21 and Mozambique on March 25.
