CAF Cup Not a Priority, Says Espérance Coach José Anigo Ahead of Etoile du Sahel Clash
Espérance Sportive de Tunis head coach José Anigo has downplayed the importance of the CAF Confederation Cup in his early tenure at the club, admitting the competition is not among his top priorities this season.
Speaking ahead of Espérance’s Group A clash against domestic rivals Etoile du Sahel in the second round of the CAF Cup group stage, Anigo was candid about his intentions and expectations.
“I don’t want to put more pressure on the players, especially since we don’t have our full squad available for this competition. We’re not approaching it with our best assets,” Anigo told reporters, as quoted by Afrik-Foot. The former Marseille boss is expected to rotate heavily, with an eye toward managing player fitness during a congested schedule.
The French coach, who recently took over at Espérance, made his debut in a heavy defeat to Egypt’s Al Ahly in the first round of the CAF Cup group stage. That result, coupled with ongoing pre-season preparations, appears to have influenced his approach to the continental competition.
“The CAF Cup comes right in the middle of our preparation and disrupts it somewhat,” Anigo said. “Honestly, this competition bothers me a little. For now, I am focused on the Tunisian Cup and the league.”
Anigo also revealed that his preferred lineup for domestic competitions is already taking shape, suggesting that the squad selection for continental fixtures may be largely experimental as he continues to assess his players.
While Espérance supporters may be disappointed by the club’s de-emphasis on continental silverware, Anigo’s remarks highlight a strategic decision to concentrate on domestic success first, particularly as he looks to stabilize a team still adjusting to a new coaching philosophy.
Espérance’s clash with Etoile du Sahel will nonetheless be closely watched, not only for its competitive implications but also due to the fierce rivalry between the two Tunisian giants.
