Erling Haaland’s Manchester City future put on hold by father Alfie amid appeal

Erling Haaland’s father, Alfie, says the Norway striker’s long-term future at Manchester City should not be assessed until the club’s appeal against its financial ruling has been concluded.

Haaland is contracted to Manchester City until the summer of 2034, but the club’s financial case has raised questions over the future of its wider project and the players central to it.

Manchester City was found to have committed 115 breaches of Premier League financial regulations. The outcome of the ongoing appeal could have significant implications for the club in the coming years, although Alfie Haaland believes it is too early to consider how the matter might affect his son.

“I think we should wait for the appeal process,” Alfie Haaland told French website Foot Mercato. “Things could move quickly, even though there are fans and rival clubs, and especially journalists, who are currently targeting Manchester City. So we have to wait and see the result of the appeal.”

Haaland has established himself as one of the most important figures in Manchester City’s current sporting project and is the team’s most prominent player. Any uncertainty surrounding his position is therefore likely to attract considerable attention while the financial case remains unresolved.

The striker has made a strong start to the season, scoring nine goals in his first nine Premier League matches. He failed to score, however, when Manchester City were beaten 1-0 by Brighton.

Alfie Haaland added that Manchester City believes it has evidence capable of clearing the club.

“Manchester City believe they have strong evidence to prove their innocence, so I think it is better to wait until the decision is made,” he said.

“Erling is thinking about playing football for as long as possible and is focused on that. I think those of us outside the pitch think about this case more than anyone else.”

The appeal process is therefore likely to remain central to any discussion about Manchester City’s future and the possibility of changes to the club’s plans. For now, Haaland’s father has declined to anticipate the consequences, while the player remains focused on continuing his career with the club.
