Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has assembled a formidable attacking lineup for his first matches in charge of the Super Eagles, selecting five forwards for the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
According to ScoreNigeria, Chelle has placed his trust in Victor Osimhen, who will lead the attack, with Victor Boniface, Paul Onuachu, Sadiq Umar, and newcomer Tolu Arokodare also included in the squad.
Osimhen Leads, but questions remain
Osimhen, currently playing for Galatasaray, is expected to spearhead the attack, but Chelle faces a difficult decision in determining his best attacking combination.
Boniface has been in exceptional form for Bayer Leverkusen, consistently delivering for his club.
However, his performances for Nigeria have not yet reached the same heights.
Since making his international debut in March 2019—when he scored the fastest goal in Super Eagles history in just 10 seconds—Boniface has struggled to replicate his club-level goal-scoring prowess, netting only twice in seven appearances since 2021.
Umar, who missed the last Africa Cup of Nations under controversial circumstances after a disputed injury diagnosis from the Nigerian medical team, has rediscovered his best form at Valencia.
He will be looking to prove himself if given the opportunity.
Meanwhile, Onuachu brings experience to the squad, while Arokodare, who has yet to feature for Nigeria at any level, has been enjoying an impressive season in Europe following his move to Latvia.
His selection signals Chelle’s willingness to introduce fresh talent to the squad.
Tactical challenge for Chelle
With an array of attacking options, Chelle faces the challenge of finding the most effective strike partnership.
Both Rwanda and Zimbabwe will pose tough tests, and the Super Eagles must be clinical if they are to strengthen their chances of qualification.
As the matches approach, all eyes will be on how Chelle structures his attacking unit, with the pressure on Nigeria to deliver results in their bid for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
