AC Monza have officially confirmed the signing of Equatorial Guinea international Pedro Obiang, with the experienced midfielder putting pen to paper on a contract that runs until June 2026, and includes a clause for automatic extension under specific conditions.
Obiang, born in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, on 27 March 1992, arrives at the Italian club bringing with him a wealth of top-flight European experience.
Although he began his career in Spain, he later chose to represent Equatorial Guinea at international level, where he has since earned 19 caps and scored three goals.
The move sees Obiang return once again to familiar surroundings in Italian football. His professional journey began in earnest when he joined the youth academy at Atlético Madrid, before transferring to Sampdoria in 2008.
It was with the Genoa-based side that he made his senior debut in Serie A on 12 September 2010 in a high-profile clash against Juventus.
Over the course of five seasons with Sampdoria, Obiang became a regular fixture in midfield, amassing 139 appearances and contributing four goals.
His performances earned him a move to the Premier League, where he joined West Ham United in the summer of 2015.
During his time in England, Obiang made 116 appearances for the Hammers, scoring three goals. He was widely regarded for his tactical intelligence, passing range, and defensive reliability, attributes that made him a valued member of the West Ham squad during his four-year spell at the club.
In 2019, Obiang returned to Serie A, signing with Sassuolo. He would go on to spend five seasons with the Neroverdi, making 182 appearances and scoring five goals.
His leadership qualities came to the forefront last season when he captained the team during a crucial campaign that saw Sassuolo bounce back to the top flight following their relegation in 2024.
His influence both on and off the pitch was instrumental in guiding the club to promotion.
Now at Monza, Obiang is expected to play a pivotal role in stabilising the midfield. With the club keen to solidify its presence in Serie A, his blend of experience, composure, and leadership is viewed as a crucial asset.
Monza’s management have made no secret of their desire to strengthen the spine of the team, and the acquisition of Obiang is a clear signal of that intent.
Obiang’s versatility across multiple midfield roles adds further value, making him a key component in the squad’s tactical flexibility.
In addition to his on-field contributions, the club is also looking to benefit from his mentorship to younger players as they navigate the challenges of top-tier competition.
This latest signing marks a notable chapter in Monza’s ongoing development, and the club will be hoping that Obiang’s arrival contributes significantly to their ambitions in the seasons ahead.
