Enzo Fernandez reunites with Enzo Maresca after completing Manchester City move

Enzo Fernandez says Enzo Maresca played a key role in bringing him to Manchester City and is relishing the chance to work with his former Chelsea manager again after signing a five-year contract with the club.

The Argentina midfielder completed his move to the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, ending several busy days during which the transfer was finalised.

Fernandez previously worked with Maresca at Chelsea, where the pair helped the club win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup. The midfielder believes that relationship was important in persuading him to join City and is looking forward to renewing it in Manchester.

“He is a top manager, honestly,” Fernandez said.

“I had him at my previous club. They were incredible moments. I learned so much with him.

“He’s very similar to Latin people, very passionate. So, for me, it’s a pleasure to work with him.”

Fernandez acknowledged that completing the transfer had been difficult, but said he and Maresca were both determined to make the move happen.

“To be honest, we were both very eager for it to happen, because it wasn’t easy for me to be here today,” he said.

“But I know he also made a big effort, speaking to the club, and I’m grateful that he did that.

“It was a long few days, but in the end I’m here and I’m very happy to be joining this club.”

Maresca, who previously worked with Fernandez at Chelsea, was said to have made a significant effort in discussions with City as the club pursued the midfielder. Fernandez said he was grateful for the manager’s involvement during the negotiations.

The new arrival also spoke with pride about becoming the latest Argentine player to represent Manchester City. He follows a distinguished group of compatriots who have played for the club, including Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez, Pablo Zabaleta, Julian Alvarez and Nicolas Otamendi.

“Great Argentine players have come through here and made history, like Juli and Ota and the ones you mentioned,” Fernandez said.

“Manchester City, not only in Argentina but around the world, are one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“So for me it’s a privilege to be here and give 100% every day, to take the club as high as possible.”

Fernandez will also be reunited with Willy Caballero, who returned to Manchester City this summer as part of Maresca’s coaching staff.

The former City goalkeeper kept in touch with Fernandez during the transfer process and regularly contacted him to ask whether the move would be completed.

“I spoke with Willy many times,” Fernandez said. “I have a great relationship with him. He was always sending me messages, asking me whether the move was happening and whether I was coming.

“I’m very happy to be here and to be with them again.”

Fernandez now begins the next stage of his career at Manchester City, with Maresca hoping his signing will bring additional quality and experience to his new-look squad.

City’s next match is against Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
