English-Sierra Leonean manager Liam Rosenior puzzled by Garnacho boos
Liam Rosenior has admitted he struggles to understand the hostility directed at Alejandro Garnacho, suggesting the jeers from opposition supporters may stem from the winger’s ability to influence games.
The Chelsea manager was asked this week why Garnacho so often finds himself the subject of boos, particularly in away fixtures. Rosenior offered a measured response, insisting he sees little justification for the reaction.
“I don’t understand why that happens,” he said. “Maybe it’s because he can be such a threat. When you play for a club like Chelsea, that comes with the territory. You have to rise above it and not take notice. I don’t think you use it as fuel. Your motivation to perform should already be there.”
Garnacho, 21, arrived at Chelsea F.C. in a £40 million move from Manchester United F.C. and has experienced a mixed reception since the transfer. In 17 Premier League appearances this season, the Argentina international has scored once and provided three assists, flashes of productivity that hint at his potential but have yet to fully convince all sections of the support.
Still early in his development, Garnacho has shown moments of direct running and unpredictability that can unsettle defenders. Rosenior believes that quality may explain the reaction he receives in hostile environments, rather than any deficiency in attitude or application.
Circumstances could now present the winger with a significant opportunity. The suspension of Pedro Neto, combined with injuries to Jamie Gittens and Estevao, has left Chelsea light in wide areas ahead of Wednesday night’s clash with Aston Villa F.C..
Rosenior revealed that Garnacho has been pressing hard for greater involvement, impressing in training and pushing for a starting role.
