English-Nigerian winger Malcolm Ebiowei released by Blackpool after just four appearances
Blackpool have parted ways with Malcolm Ebiowei, just weeks after signing the winger in what was expected to be a long-term move.
The 22-year-old, who is of Nigerian descent, had joined the Seasiders on a two-year deal with an option for a further year, but his time at Bloomfield Road has ended abruptly.
Ebiowei arrived at Blackpool during the summer following his release from Crystal Palace, with hopes of rebuilding his career in League One.
However, after only four appearances, manager Steve Bruce and the club’s hierarchy decided to terminate the contract.
The decision comes as a surprise given the initial investment of faith in the young attacker, who was once regarded as a promising prospect in English football.
In a brief statement, Blackpool confirmed the termination was by mutual agreement.
“Blackpool Football Club can announce that Malcolm Ebiowei has left the club by mutual consent. The club wishes Malcolm all the best for the future,” the statement read.
Ebiowei, who also had spells at Derby County and has featured for England’s youth teams, was seen as a player with the potential to add creativity and flair to Blackpool’s attack. But his short stay raises questions about his form, fitness, or fit within Steve Bruce’s tactical plans.
At 22, the Anglo-Nigerian winger still has time to relaunch his career. His availability as a free agent could attract interest from clubs in England or abroad, particularly those willing to take a chance on his technical ability and raw pace.
