Bukayo Saka’s injury layoff may not be as long as initially feared, with reports suggesting the Arsenal star could be back in action within weeks.
The England international limped off during the Gunners’ emphatic 5-0 victory over Leeds United last weekend, sparking concerns over a serious hamstring problem.
Saka, who is of Nigerian heritage through his parents, has been one of Arsenal’s most influential players this season, and his absence was viewed as a major setback to their title challenge.
Manager Mikel Arteta admitted after the Leeds game that the winger’s setback looked “significant,” explaining that the 22-year-old had pulled up while carrying the ball under pressure from a defender.
“And Bukayo, while he was running with the ball, carrying the ball, wrestling with the defender, he felt something in his hamstring,” Arteta said.
“I think it’s the other one, not the same as the previous injury. But yeah, we’ve been two weeks and already lost Kai, Martin and Bukayo. It shows how well-equipped you have to be in this league.”
Saka is certain to miss Arsenal’s clash with champions Liverpool on Sunday — a meeting between two sides that have maintained perfect starts to the season.
His absence is a considerable blow to the Gunners, who will look to preserve their momentum without him.
However, optimism is growing at the Emirates. Football.London reports that both Saka and club captain Martin Ødegaard are progressing well in their recoveries, with neither player facing the long-term absence that was initially feared.
Arsenal hope Saka will be fit for their trip to Nottingham Forest immediately after the international break.
Should the winger miss that fixture, Arteta will be desperate to have him back for the crucial showdown against Manchester City at the Emirates a week later, a match likely to shape the early title race.
