English-Nigerian Bukayo Saka hails Arsenal’s resilience after dramatic win at Newcastle
Bukayo Saka has hailed Arsenal’s resilience and fighting spirit after their hard-fought 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday.
Gabriel Magalhaes netted the decisive goal deep into stoppage time, sealing a result that Saka described as a “big statement” for the Gunners.
The England international, who is of Nigerian descent through his parents, underlined how important it was for Arsenal to finally grind out a win at a ground that has historically proved difficult for them.
His comments came after a match that saw Mikel Arteta’s side pushed to the limit by a spirited Newcastle performance and an inspired display from goalkeeper Nick Pope.
“It was a big result,” Saka told reporters. “We’ve come here in the past and results have gone against us, or decisions and stuff like that.
“It was starting to feel like that again today, but we have a big character, a big fight to turn it around, so we’re really happy.”
The winger also noted the team’s composure despite a series of contentious decisions.
“In the past, we’ve come here and had decisions go against us and whatnot, and almost today, with the penalty and some of the decisions, and Nick Pope having an unbelievable game. But we dug in and we showed that character, that resilience we have, so I’m really proud of all the boys,” he added.
Saka believes the result, sealed in the 96th minute, underscores Arsenal’s growing maturity and determination in the Premier League title race.
“We made a big statement today. It’s really good for us, you can see it in all of our faces,” he said.
