Brighton & Hove Albion’s striker, Danny Welbeck, showcased his enduring connection to Sunderland after scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 extra-time victory over Newcastle United in the FA Cup fifth round.
Welbeck, who has Ghanaian heritage, seized the moment to remind Newcastle fans of his affection for their local rivals, Sunderland.
The match at St. James’ Park was intense, with Newcastle initially leading through Alexander Isak’s 22nd-minute penalty.
Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh equalized just before halftime, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion.
In the 114th minute, Welbeck delivered a stunning chipped goal, propelling Brighton into the quarter-finals.
Post-match, Welbeck, who spent the 2010-2011 season on loan at Sunderland, couldn’t resist a playful jab at the Newcastle supporters.
As he walked off the pitch, he remarked, “Someone giving me stick there. Doesn’t know I’m a Mackem at heart.” The term “Mackem” is a colloquial nickname for residents of Sunderland and fans of Sunderland.
He added, “It is nice to come here to St James’ Park, such a special atmosphere.
“The fans made it an amazing atmosphere – great to get the winner, again. I feel like we played well.”
