Equatorial Guinea national team captain Emilio Nsue has launched scathing criticism against the country’s football association following the recent decision to suspend him and his teammate, Ivan Salvador.
During a live broadcast on his official Instagram account, Nsue leveled allegations of corruption and theft against the football association, claiming that over one million euros went missing from the federation’s coffers after Equatorial Guinea’s participation in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Nsue further stated that the national team players were not provided with proper attire before their opening match in the Africa Cup of Nations against Nigeria.
Describing the atmosphere within the team camp before the match against Guinea in the round of 16 as unfavorable, Nsue noted that members of the coaching staff requested music to be played following the defeat.
Expressing his frustration, Nsue condemned the lack of support from local football authorities during the award ceremony where he was recognized as the top scorer of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, contrasting it with the gratitude shown by Ivory Coast’s football association.
The 34-year-old striker emphasized the football association’s alleged threat to dismiss national team manager Juan Micha unless he acknowledged Nsue and Salvador as troublemakers.
Nsue, who excelled for Equatorial Guinea during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, clinching the tournament’s top scorer title with five goals, emphasized the need for accountability and transparency within the country’s football administration.
The allegations made by Nsue shed light on the challenges faced by footballers and the need for systemic reforms to ensure fair treatment and adequate support for players representing their nation on the international stage.
