Emerse Faé reflects on his unforgettable U17 World Cup triumph
Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé has fondly revisited one of the greatest moments of his early footballing life — winning the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2001 with France.
Speaking to FIFA, the former midfielder described the experience as a dream fulfilled and a defining milestone in his career.
“When you’re a kid, playing in the neighborhood with your friends, your dream is to win the World Cup, not just to participate, Faé said. When I won it in 2001, at 17, I truly fulfilled a footballer’s dream.”
That year, France’s U17 side embarked on a memorable journey that began with an early setback — a defeat against Nigeria in their opening match.
But the young Les Bleuets regrouped, showing character and composure to march through the rest of the tournament.
In the final, they produced a stunning display to avenge that earlier loss, beating the Flying Eagles 3–0 to lift the trophy.
Faé, who wore the number 12 shirt throughout the competition, recalls how that moment changed everything for him — both on and off the pitch.
“When you join a club, your status changes, he explained. People at your club see you differently, you get a lot of offers from big clubs. Personally, it was an extraordinary season that allowed me to sign a professional contract with FC Nantes a year later and start my professional playing career quite quickly.”
The midfielder’s progression from youth prospect to professional footballer was rapid, his World Cup success serving as both validation and motivation.

The exposure from the tournament not only boosted his career but also instilled in him lessons that would later shape his approach as a coach — resilience, teamwork, and the hunger to win.
Now leading Ivory Coast’s national team, Faé’s reflections come with a touch of nostalgia, as he watches a new generation of young talents compete for glory in the same tournament that launched his own journey more than two decades ago.
His words carry the wisdom of experience — a reminder of how early triumphs can shape lifelong ambition.
From a young French champion to a proud Ivorian coach, Emerse Faé’s 2001 triumph remains a cornerstone of his football story — one that continues to inspire both his players and fans who dream of following in his footsteps.
