Eliaquim Mangala retires: Former Man City defender calls time on career and begins coaching journey
Former Eliaquim Mangala has officially retired from professional football at the age of 35, bringing an end to a career that took him across some of Europe’s biggest leagues.
The former Manchester City and FC Porto centre-back confirmed his decision in an emotional social media video, where he reflected on the moment he knew it was time to step away from the pitch.
His departure marks the end of a career that also included spells at Estoril and several other European sides, with Mangala choosing a quiet but reflective exit rather than a staged farewell.
“It’s over”: Mangala’s emotional message
In his retirement statement, Mangala revealed that the decision was driven by instinct rather than prolonged deliberation, describing it as a moment of clarity.
“Most of my big decisions tend to happen in moments like this, when I feel it’s necessary to move on to something else. That’s how I feel, I don’t spend too much time thinking about it and I realize this is the moment. It’s over,” he said.
He added a definitive farewell to the game that shaped his life and career.
“There’s no return to the pitch, it’s over. Thank you, football. Thank you for everything. Thank you to all the coaches I had and to all the people who helped me.”
Mangala also reserved appreciation for his teammates across multiple clubs, highlighting the shared experiences that defined his journey in professional football.
“I also want to thank all the teammates with whom I shared difficult and happy moments, because, deep down, we are one big family and we all want the same thing.”
From European stages to coaching transition
Mangala’s career saw him rise through Portuguese football before earning a high-profile move to Manchester City, where he became part of a squad competing at the top end of English football.
Known for his physical presence and defensive strength, he featured in domestic and European competitions during a period of heavy investment and transformation at the club.
After leaving England, he returned to Portugal and continued his playing career before gradually moving out of the spotlight in recent years.
Immediate switch to coaching at Saint-Étienne
Rather than stepping away from football entirely, Mangala has already begun the next phase of his journey.
He has joined the coaching staff at AS Saint-Étienne, working under manager Ian Cathro as he transitions into a managerial and development role.
The move signals a quick shift from player to mentor, with Mangala expected to bring experience from top-level European football into his new environment.
His early involvement in coaching suggests a long-term ambition to remain in the game, this time shaping players rather than facing them on the pitch.
