El Hadji Malick Sy “Souris,” who recruited Bruno Metsu as the coach for Senegal in 2002, pays a distinguished tribute to the late coach. When Metsu was hired, there was skepticism due to his relatively modest African experience. However, Metsu went on to achieve historic success by leading Senegal to the final of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) in 2002 and qualifying for the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Korea and Japan later that year. According to Malick Sy Souris, Metsu’s legacy has given Senegal an image of a great country beyond sports, and he will forever be engraved in the collective memory of the Senegalese for elevating the country’s football to unprecedented heights. After leaving Senegal, Metsu went on to achieve success with the Al Ain club in the Gulf before his untimely passing in 2013.
