Senegal legend El Hadji Diouf believes the Lions of Teranga head into the AFCON 2025 final armed with a level of talent and composure that genuinely unsettles their opponents.

Speaking ahead of Sunday night’s title clash with hosts Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Diouf struck a confident yet measured tone, urging calm while underlining Senegal’s growing maturity on the biggest stage.

“This is a final,” Diouf said. “There are positives and negatives. We must not spoil the relationship between Senegal and Morocco because it is just one match.”

Call for calm beyond the final whistle

Diouf was keen to stress that the occasion should not damage the strong bond between the two football nations, regardless of the result. He reminded supporters that football remains a momentary contest, not a lasting division.

“I think we should not damage the relationship between Morocco and Senegal. It is only one day and life goes on,” he said. “What I want to say to the Senegalese is to remain calm. We cannot go through something harder than what we experienced in Kinshasa.”

Faith in a fearless generation

At the heart of Diouf’s confidence is Senegal’s young core, a group he believes are both mentally and technically equipped for the pressure of a continental final.

“These young players are talented, determined and brave,” he said. “We are here to play football and bring joy to people’s hearts. I am happy to see these young players ready to bounce back strongly and, why not, win the title for Senegal.”

Supporters urged to stay composed

With millions following the final from afar, Diouf appealed for restraint from fans, particularly in the face of provocation.

“All I say to the people is not to get carried away,” he noted. “One hundred million people cannot go to the stadium. Those who cannot attend should stay at home and wait for Senegal’s victory.”

Big matches bring out the best

Drawing on past landmark wins, Diouf argued that Senegal thrive under elite pressure.

“Senegal love these kinds of matches,” he said. “These young players are used to playing at the highest level.”

Confidence without arrogance

Diouf concluded by pointing to Senegal’s depth and calm assurance as decisive strengths.

“Today, the most important thing is that we have a team with exceptional calmness and talent that truly inspires fear,” he said. “Look at the bench, it is a completely different team. So let us stay calm. We are comfortable, confident and balanced.”
