El-Hadji Diouf asserts Senegal's dominance ahead of AFCON opener: 'We are the team to beat,' warns opponents

El-Hadji Ousseynou Diouf, the former Senegalese international, asserted that Senegal, led by coach Aliou Cissé, stands as the best team in Africa currently. As the reigning African champions arrive in Yamoussoukro for the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Diouf sent a clear message to the Lions of Teranga’s adversaries.

Upon the team’s arrival at their base camp, El-Hadji Diouf, a prominent figure accompanying the delegation, emphasized Senegal’s determination to secure a second consecutive AFCON title, stating, “We know we are the team to beat, but before passing us over, we have to wake up very early.”

Diouf, confident in Senegal’s capabilities, sees the pressure as a positive force that can fuel the team’s quest for back-to-back victories.

Addressing the media, Diouf expressed his belief that the Lions of Teranga possess the best squad, featuring current football stars who find joy on the pitch.

He sees this as a source of pleasure for fans and a testament to Senegal’s footballing prowess.

“We’ll learn a lot from our mistakes to try to keep our title, and I think it’s good pressure,” he added.

Looking ahead to Senegal’s first match against Gambia, scheduled amidst the scorching heat of Yamoussoukro, Diouf dismissed concerns, stating that the players, proud and confident, are ready for the competition.

As the team gears up to face Gambia, El-Hadji Diouf remains unwavering in his conviction that Senegal represents the best team in Africa at present.

With an unwavering commitment to please the continent, Senegal, under the guidance of Aliou Cissé, enters the AFCON arena with the confidence and determination to etch their name in African football history once again.

The Lions of Teranga are set to face Gambia in their opening match, and the footballing world awaits the unfolding drama of AFCON 2023.
