Egyptian fans are hopeful for a substantial medal haul at Paris 2024, buoyed by the remarkable performances of the national team across various sports in the previous edition, Tokyo 2020.
Egypt’s participation in the Tokyo Olympics marked a pivotal moment across multiple sports, with the nation securing a total of 6 medals across four disciplines: Taekwondo, Karate, Greco-Roman Wrestling, and Modern Pentathlon.
The achievements of Egypt’s athletes in Tokyo not only made history but also represented the nation’s best-ever performance at the Olympic Games.
The tally of medals for Egypt at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics stood at 6 (1 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze), setting a new record for the nation. This success surpassed Egypt’s previous best of 5 medals across three previous editions: Berlin 1936, London 1948, and Athens 2004.
Egypt clinched the 53rd spot in the overall medal standings at the championship.
Currently, 94 athletes across 17 different sports have qualified for the Paris Olympics, scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
Egypt’s Taekwondo team secured two new berths for the upcoming Olympic Games, with Ahmed Wael Nasr qualifying for Paris 2024 in the 68 kg category after defeating Mali’s Mohamed Fofana.
Similarly, Aya Shahtah qualified for the Olympic event after reaching the finals of the African qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal, in the 67 kg category.
Egypt’s handball team sealed their ticket to Paris by winning the African Nations Cup for the third consecutive time, securing their ninth title in history after defeating Algeria in the final match.
The Egyptian U-23 football team also booked their place in Paris 2024 after finishing second and claiming the silver medal in the African U-23 Cup of Nations held in Morocco.
In volleyball, Egypt secured a spot in the Olympics after topping the African rankings, outperforming Tunisia.
Egyptian sailor Ali Badawi qualified for Paris 2024 after winning the African Men’s Championship, while Khaloud Mansy clinched the African Championship for women, making her the first-ever Egyptian kayaking athlete to qualify for two consecutive Olympic Games.
Egypt’s archery team secured their place in Paris 2024 by winning gold in the men’s team event and women’s team event at the African Championships in Tunisia.
In swimming, Egypt’s synchronized swimming team secured 8 spots for the upcoming Olympics.
Additionally, veteran swimmer Marwan El Kamash qualified for Paris 2024 in the 800m and 1500m freestyle races.
Egypt’s diving team secured 4 spots in the Olympics, including 2 spots in the men’s and women’s 3m springboard events and 2 spots in the men’s and women’s 10m platform events.
In shooting, Azmy Mehelba secured his place in Paris 2024 after winning the World Skeet Shooting Championship, along with 10 quota places obtained by Egyptian athletes at the African Championship held recently in Cairo.
Mohammed Hamdy also qualified for Paris 2024 in the men’s individual air rifle event.
