Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has expressed optimism that teammate Virgil van Dijk will extend his stay at Anfield, following Salah’s own contract renewal.
In Sunday’s 2-1 victory over West Ham United, the Egyptian provided an assist for Luis Díaz’s opening goal, while Van Dijk secured the win with a late header.
The assist means the 32-year-old has 45 goals and assists combined in the Premier League.
Post-match, Salah told Sky Sports: “I’m glad that we managed to do that early, before the end of the season.
“Hopefully also Virgil will be next. I just say hopefully! I’m just saying. Look, he can do whatever he wants but I would love to see him here again next season. But of course, he can choose to do whatever he wants.”
Van Dijk, celebrating his 100th appearance as Liverpool captain, responded with a smile, emphasizing the emotional significance of the match coinciding with the Hillsborough anniversary.
He said, “I can say I am very proud today to captain my 100th game for Liverpool. And it was an emotional day, because obviously it was the Hillsborough anniversary so that was the main focus – get three points and get a step closer towards all of our dreams.”
Reports suggest that Van Dijk is expected to sign a new two-year deal with Liverpool, aligning with Salah’s recent contract extension.
The duo has been instrumental in Liverpool’s recent successes, including their Champions League triumph in 2018/19 and their first Premier League title in the subsequent season.
Liverpool’s win against West Ham has moved them 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League, bringing them closer to securing the title.
