Mohamed Farag Amer, the president of Smouha Sporting Club, has voiced his support for a potential overhaul of the Egyptian Premier League system, citing the intense pressure under which the league operates and its impact on the national team’s performance.
Speaking on the program “Box to Box” broadcasted on ETC channel, Amer emphasized the need for changes in the Egyptian league structure, highlighting the tight scheduling and its detrimental effect on the Egyptian national team’s preparation.
“The Egyptian league is under significant pressure, leaving little room for the Egyptian national team to thrive. Matches are being played every three days,” stated Amer.
He expressed his approval for altering the current league system, advocating for a fairer approach in the league’s second phase, including the possibility of conducting a draw.
“We don’t object to having a draw in the second phase,” said Amer. He acknowledged Smouha’s stronger performances away from home but suggested that experimenting with this system for a year would provide valuable insights before making a final judgment.
Amer proposed adopting a Belgian-style league system for a season to alleviate match pressure, especially considering the overlapping of seasons.
He stressed the importance of benefiting the Egyptian national team, indicating his openness to implementing the new system for a year as a trial period.
“While I maintain good relations with all clubs and respect their viewpoints, I support the idea of reforming the Egyptian league system,” affirmed Amer.
