Mohamed Sherif’s time at Al-Khaleej appears to be coming to an end, with the Egyptian forward set to depart when his contract expires this summer.
The 29-year-old, who joined the Saudi Pro League side from Al Ahly in 2023, has struggled to secure a regular place under head coach Giorgos Donis, prompting the club to seek alternatives in attack.
Limited game time seals Sherif’s exit
Despite showing glimpses of his ability, Sherif has been unable to cement his place in Donis’ starting lineup.
The Greek manager has reportedly urged Al-Khaleej’s board to find a new striker, indicating that the Egyptian international does not fit into his long-term plans.
Al-Khaleej had attempted to offload Sherif in the past two transfer windows but failed to reach an agreement with any potential suitors.
With just three starts to his name this season, he has made 15 appearances and accumulated only 413 minutes on the pitch.
His tally of five goals in 19 games since arriving in Saudi Arabia has not been enough to convince the club to extend his stay.
A return to Al Ahly on the horizon?
Sherif’s next move remains uncertain, but reports suggest he is keen on a return to Al Ahly, the club where he enjoyed the most successful spell of his career.
While Egyptian sides Zamalek and Pyramids FC have both expressed interest in signing him, Sherif is reportedly waiting for a signal from Al Ahly before making a decision.
The forward, who previously played for Wadi Degla and ENPPI before making his mark at Al Ahly, may now be on the verge of returning to familiar surroundings.
However, if the Cairo giants do not make an approach, he could consider offers from other Egyptian clubs.
Sherif is not the only player set to leave Al-Khaleej this summer, with at least three others, including Abdallah Al-Salem, expected to depart.
Al-Salem has already signed a pre-contract agreement with Al-Qadsiah ahead of next season, signaling a period of change for the Saudi club.
As Sherif’s contract nears its conclusion, his next destination will be a key point of interest, particularly for Egyptian clubs looking to strengthen their attacking options.
