The Egyptian Football Association has refuted claims circulating on social media regarding a new date for the highly anticipated summit match between Zamalek and Al Ahly.
Al Ahly boycotted the fixture, originally set for last Tuesday in the first round of the coronation stage, in protest against the Egyptian FA’s decision to appoint an Egyptian officiating crew instead of granting their request for a foreign referee.
With Zamalek present at Cairo Stadium, referee Mahmoud Bassiouni waited the standard 20 minutes before blowing his whistle and exiting the field, confirming Al Ahly’s withdrawal.
A widely shared statement, falsely attributed to the FA, suggested that the match had been rescheduled with foreign referees in place. However, the federation moved quickly to deny any such decision.
“Regarding the statement attributed to the Egyptian Football Association, which is spread on social media platforms, it is not true and was not issued by the federation,” the FA clarified through its media center.
The League Clubs Association is expected to announce its official decision on the matter in the coming days.
