Egypt U-17 seal AFCON 2027 qualification after Tunisia–Algeria stalemate
Egypt’s youth national team are heading to the continental stage after securing qualification for the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations in dramatic fashion — without even kicking a ball.
The decisive moment came on Thursday evening when Tunisia and Algeria played out a 1-1 draw in the North African qualifying tournament currently being held in Libya. That result proved enough to mathematically confirm Egypt’s place among Africa’s elite youth sides.
Earlier in the day, the Young Pharaohs had done their part, grinding out a crucial 2-1 victory over hosts Libya. The win lifted Egypt to six points, placing them second in the standings behind group leaders Morocco.
With Tunisia and Algeria both stuck on four points after their draw, neither side can now overtake Egypt, handing the Pharaohs the coveted qualification ticket.
The North African Junior Championship, featuring five regional powerhouses Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya have once again showcased the fierce competition and rising talent within the region. But it is Egypt who have emerged as one of the standout performers when it mattered most.
Qualification is not just a milestone — it is a statement.
Egypt’s young stars have demonstrated resilience, composure, and a winning mentality, qualities that will be vital when they step onto the continental stage.
The upcoming tournament, set to take place in Morocco from April 25 to May 15, 2026, will feature 16 teams from across Africa, with all battling for supremacy and the chance to announce themselves on the global scene.
For Egypt, the mission now shifts from qualification to ambition. The Young Pharaohs are not just heading to AFCON, they are going there to compete.
