Egypt have moved out on their own as the national team with the most own goals in Africa Cup of Nations history after a costly mistake against Ivory Coast in the Morocco 2025 quarterfinals.
Left-back Ahmed Fattouh unintentionally diverted the ball into his own net on Saturday, from a Yan Diomande corner just before half-time.
That strike was Egypt’s fourth own goal across all their AFCON appearances, pushing them ahead of Burkina Faso, Algeria, and Tunisia, who have each conceded 3 own goals in the competition.
The list of Egyptian players who have scored at the wrong end in AFCON now includes Ghanem Sultan against Guinea on 11 March 1976, Ahmed El Sayed versus DR Congo on 3 February 2006, Ahmed Hassan against Cameroon on 25 January 2010, and now Fattouh against Ivory Coast in 2025.
Despite this unwanted record, Egypt continue to show their pedigree at the tournament. They reached the quarterfinals by beating Benin 3-1, while Ivory Coast advanced with a 3-0 victory over Burkina Faso, setting up the clash in which Fattouh’s misfortune wrote a strange new statistical chapter in the Pharaohs’ rich AFCON story.
