Egypt survives Cape Verde test with penalty shootout win

Egypt’s national football team endured a nervy contest against Cape Verde, ultimately clinching third place at the Al-Ain International Friendly Cup in the UAE through a 2-0 win on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

The match highlighted a series of challenges for the Pharaohs, who struggled to find rhythm in attack and showed defensive vulnerabilities early on.

Cape Verde took the lead in the seventh minute via a penalty, capitalizing on a mistake by Egypt’s right-back, Mohamed Hany. Egypt failed to react for much of the first half, as slow buildup and questionable tactical choices hindered their progress. Bright moments did come courtesy of Omar Marmoush, whose determined efforts tested the Cape Verde goalkeeper multiple times.

Manager Hossam Hassan made key substitutions in the second half, bringing in fresh energy. These changes paid off when Marmoush scored a fine equalizer in the 56th minute. Egypt’s intensity soared, and they nearly found a winner, but an effort was ruled out for a foul.

As the game moved to penalties, Egypt kept their cool while Cape Verde faltered. The victory provides relief following a tough semifinal loss and helps restore hope ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Despite key absences and recent disappointments, Egypt’s blend of youth and experience keeps ambitions alive to reclaim continental glory.
