Egypt name squad for 2025 African Youth Handball Championship

Egypt head coach Tarek Mahrous has announced his 19-man squad for the African Youth Handball Championship, which will be held in Cote d’Ivoire from 6 to 13 September.

The tournament is for players aged under 20 and will see Egypt compete in a group alongside Cameroon, Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Mahrous has selected three goalkeepers for the competition: Mostafa Ahmed, Omar Ahmed and Mohamed Hisham.

The squad also includes players across all the main court positions, with two left wings, three left backs, three playmakers, two right backs, three right wings and two pivots.

The African Youth Handball Championship will take place over eight days, beginning on 6 September and concluding on 13 September. Cote d’Ivoire will host the event, with Egypt drawn in a group featuring three other national teams.

Alongside Egypt, the group contains Cameroon, Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo. Those matches will determine which teams progress to the later stages of the African competition.

The tournament also carries added importance because qualification for the next global event is at stake. The top four teams in the African Youth Handball Championship will qualify directly for the 2027 World Youth Championship.

That world tournament is scheduled to be played in North Macedonia in 2027. Egypt will therefore be aiming not only to compete for the African title, but also to finish among the four leading sides and secure a place at the global championship.

Mahrous has opted for a balanced squad, with Egypt represented by players in every listed outfield role as well as a trio of goalkeepers. The group includes Omar Baraka and Moaz El Sayed on the left wing, while Abdelrahman Ashraf, Youssef Farid and Yassin Khaled provide the options on the right.

Yehia El Kordy, Adel Saad and Ahmed Helmy have been selected as left backs, with Mohamed Adlan and Youssef Amr covering the right-back position. Youssef Abdelghany, Hamza Walid and Moamen Naqeeb are the designated playmakers, while Ali Madbouly and Omar Reda are the two pivots.

Egypt’s campaign in Cote d’Ivoire will begin with the group stage, with the competition’s leading four teams ultimately earning qualification for North Macedonia 2027.
