Egypt finish fifth at Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games with record 58-medal haul

Egypt finished fifth in the overall medal table and ranked first among Arab nations after winning 58 medals at the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games in Italy.

The Egyptian delegation collected 23 gold medals, 16 silver and 19 bronze before the conclusion of the final day’s events. Only Italy, Turkiye, Greece and France finished above Egypt according to the number of gold medals won.

Egypt’s total was seven medals better than its result at the Oran 2022 Mediterranean Games in Algeria, where it won 51 medals – 13 gold, 15 silver and 23 bronze – to finish sixth overall.

Finswimming produced Egypt’s biggest medal return in a single sport, with 12 medals: four gold, four silver and four bronze.

Tarek Hassan won gold in the 100m monofin and 50m underwater events, while Mehab Ehab took the 400m monofin title. Ahmed Hisham Radwan claimed gold in the 200m bifins.

The silver medals went to Salma Rabie Raslan in the 50m bifins, Mariam Mohamed Helmy Hegab in the 50m underwater event, Nada Magdy Hegress in the 400m monofin and Ahmed Awad in the 200m monofin.

Ahmed Hisham Radwan also won bronze in the 100m bifins, with Mehab Ehab taking bronze in the 200m monofin. Egypt’s mixed relay teams added two further bronze medals: the 4x100m monofin team of Tarek Hassan, Renad Tamer, Yassin Farhat and Mariam Mohamed Helmy, and the 4x50m bifins team of Ahmed Hisham Radwan, Seif Khaled, Salma Rabie Raslan and Mariam Helmy Hegab.

Weightlifting and wrestling

Weightlifting delivered 10 medals – seven gold, two silver and one bronze.

Sara Samir won both the snatch and clean and jerk in the 77kg category. Abdelrahman Younes completed the same double in the 85kg division. Rofida Fathy won clean and jerk gold and snatch silver in the 69kg class, while Nour El-Din Zaki took snatch gold and clean and jerk silver in the 65kg category. Karim Kahla won gold in the jerk and bronze in the snatch in the 95kg division.

Egyptian wrestlers collected seven medals: two gold, two silver and three bronze. Mohamed Hassan won the 67kg title and Samar Hamza took gold in the 76kg category. Mahmoud Farrag, competing at 60kg, and Abdelrahman Haitham, in the 125kg division, won silver. Mustafa Hussein, Shehab El-Din Abdel Raouf and Mooda Badawy claimed bronze in the 77kg, 65kg and 62kg categories respectively.

Karate added five medals, including gold for Feryal Ashraf at 68kg, Rahma Taleb at 61kg and Taha Tarek at over 84kg. Youssef Badawy won bronze in the under-84kg category, while Reem Ahmed Ramzy took bronze at 50kg.

Fencing also produced five medals. Mohamed El-Sayed won epee gold and Mohamed Hamza took foil gold. Youssef Shamel and Sara Amr Hosny earned silver in epee and foil respectively, while Abdelrahman Taleb won foil bronze.

Table tennis and judo

Egypt’s table tennis teams and players won five medals – two gold and three silver.

The women’s team of Hana Goda, Dina Meshref, Mariam El-Hodhod and Farah Abdel Aziz won gold. The men’s team of Omar Assar, Youssef Abdel Aziz, Omar Bdeir and Badr Mostafa took silver. Omar Assar and Hana Goda also won silver in the mixed doubles.

Hana Goda claimed gold in the women’s singles, while Youssef Abdel Aziz won silver in the men’s singles.

Judo contributed four medals: gold for Omar El-Ramly in the under-100kg category, silver for Abdelrahman Abdelghany at 81kg, and bronze for Hady Hussein and Safa Soliman in the over-100kg and over-78kg divisions.

Swimming, gymnastics and boxing

Egypt won three gymnastics medals. Omar El-Shabki took silver on pommel horse, while Omar El-Araby won bronze on rings and in the all-around.

The swimming team secured three medals. Abdelrahman Sameh won the men’s 50m butterfly, with Farida Osman taking bronze in the women’s 50m butterfly and Youssef Ramadan finishing third in the men’s 100m butterfly.

Boxers Nabila Alaa El-Din and Mohamed Hossam Abdel Moneim won silver in the 75kg category and bronze at under 90kg respectively.

Egypt’s men’s handball team completed a perfect campaign by beating Greece 31-29 in the final to win gold.

The final medal for the delegation came in athletics, where Mohamed Magdy Hamza won bronze in the shot put with a throw of 20.21 metres.
