Caicedo aims to become more vocal Chelsea leader under Alonso

Moises Caicedo says he wants to develop into a more vocal leader at Chelsea after returning to the starting line-up under manager Xabi Alonso.

The Ecuador international made his first start under Alonso in Saturday’s 5-1 Premier League win over Bournemouth, having previously been sidelined by injury.

Caicedo is already part of Chelsea’s leadership group at their Cobham training ground, but the 24-year-old believes he must communicate more clearly during matches to help guide his team-mates.

“With Xabi I am going to keep developing, for sure, and show him why he trusts me,” Caicedo told Chelsea’s official website.

The midfielder said improving his communication on the pitch had been a consistent message from his coaches, despite the leadership qualities they believe he already possesses.

“I think every coach tells me that I can improve talking on the pitch, you know? Because they know that I’m a leader, but it will be better for me if I start talking more with the players,” he said.

“I try my best, but it’s not in my nature. So when I’m not able to talk, I just try to show even more.”

Caicedo pointed to former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva as an example of how to lead a team. The Brazilian was known for supporting his team-mates and setting standards during his time at the club.

“You learn from the previous ones, like Thiago Silva; he was an example for us,” Caicedo said.

“He tried to help us in every moment. How he was a leader here was amazing for all of us.”

The Ecuadorian said being included among Chelsea’s captains was a source of pride for him and his family. He also explained that, while he is not naturally inclined to speak frequently, he aims to influence others through his performances and conduct.

“Now being one of the captains is a pleasure for me, and a special feeling for my family,” he added.

“Even if I’m not a player who likes to talk a lot, I like to show through what I do, so others can see my example.”

Chelsea are sixth in the Premier League, eight points behind leaders Manchester City. They will look to build on their emphatic victory against Bournemouth when they travel to Everton on Saturday.
