Al Ahly of Egypt, the defending champion of the previous edition of the African League of Champion Clubs, suffered a disappointing exit from the competition last Saturday. They were eliminated during the return matches of the round of 16 by Al Ahly Benghazi of Libya. The Egyptians lost 3-2 against the Libyans, following a 1-0 defeat in the first leg.
These results led to Al Ahly’s elimination from the tournament, transferring them to the Confederation Cup, thus ending their chance to defend their title. This outcome was met with great disappointment in the camp of the African giant.
Sayed Abdel-Hafiz, the director of the football sector at Ahli, acknowledged the team’s failure and attributed it to various challenges, including retirements, injuries, and playing matches behind closed doors. He emphasized the need to support the team and take measures to improve its performance.
Coach Mohamad Youssef expressed his disappointment with the team’s poor result in the African competition, highlighting the difficult circumstances they are working under. He emphasized that even top coaches like Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola would struggle in similar situations.
