Edo Queens are aiming to dominate Nigerian women’s football and make a strong impact on the continental stage, with their sights firmly set on winning the CAF Women’s Champions League.
The club’s newly reappointed chairman, Comrade Phillip Shaibu, has expressed confidence in the team’s ability to build on their domestic success and establish themselves among Africa’s elite.
Speaking to Completesports.com, Shaibu highlighted the club’s determination to retain the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) title while remaining unbeaten, mirroring the success of their male counterparts, Bendel Insurance FC.
“After winning the NWFL title last season and remaining unbeaten so far, Edo Queens are determined to emulate the unbeaten record of Bendel Insurance FC. Our target is to win the league again this year and make a strong return to the continental scene,” he said.
Aiming for continental success
Edo Queens have made an impressive start to the season, going undefeated in the first phase of the NWFL.
Shaibu believes this momentum will be crucial as the team pushes toward securing a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
“Our goal is to qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League and this time, win the title for Nigeria,” he added.
With a strong squad and consistent performances, Edo Queens are confident of making an impact on the continental stage.
Winning the NWFL once again would secure their ticket to the tournament, where they hope to challenge Africa’s best teams and bring home the prestigious trophy.
Support from Edo State Government
Shaibu also acknowledged the role of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo in the resurgence of both Edo Queens and Bendel Insurance FC. He credited the governor with restoring the club’s benefits, ensuring that both teams remain highly motivated.
He pointed to Bendel Insurance’s resilience following the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) decision to deduct points from the club after a violent incident in their match against Kano Pillars FC in November 2024.
“Bendel Insurance was buoyed by the restoration of their benefits, as well as the added motivation after the NPFL deducted points following violence during their match against Kano Pillars FC. We thank the NFF Appeals Committee for their decision, as Bendel Insurance maintains one of the best security networks at matches,” he stated.
Commitment to discipline
Shaibu concluded by emphasizing the club’s commitment to discipline, ensuring that past incidents do not repeat themselves.
Edo Queens remain focused on their objectives, with their immediate priority being success in the domestic league, followed by a historic campaign in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
