Roma’s interest in Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee has received strong backing from former club sporting director Walter Sabatini as negotiations continue ahead of the January window.

Zirkzee, who has Nigerian heritage, is the subject of talks between Roma sporting director Ricky Massara and Manchester United, with the Serie A side exploring a potential deal for the former Bologna forward.

Sabatini, who previously worked closely with Massara in Rome, has publicly endorsed both the player and the club’s current sporting leadership, expressing confidence in Massara’s ability to deliver the move.

Speaking to Il Corriere dello Sport, Sabatini praised Roma’s sporting director, saying, “He’s a fixer, intelligent, well-prepared, and clear.”

The experienced football executive also spoke highly of Zirkzee’s qualities, insisting the striker has the tools to succeed at the highest level regardless of competition or environment.

Sabatini believes Roma would benefit from adding a forward of Zirkzee’s profile, particularly as the club looks to strengthen its attacking options in the second half of the season.

He underlined Massara’s determination to complete the deal, adding, “I hope Massara manages to get him, I know he’s working on him like a blacksmith, with the same dedication.”

Zirkzee joined Manchester United with high expectations but has found consistency harder to achieve, prompting speculation over his short-term future.

Roma view the situation as a potential opportunity, with Massara continuing discussions as the January market approaches.
