Dutch-Ghanaian forward Memphis Depay sidelined with injury
Dutch international of Ghanaian descent Memphis Depay is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury during Corinthians’ clash against Flamengo.
The 32-year-old forward will be out of action for at least one month following the setback, which occurred early in the match.
Depay was forced off in the 22nd minute, raising immediate concerns, and subsequent medical examinations have now confirmed that the injury is more serious than initially feared.
The timing of the injury could not be worse for the Dutch international, who is now set to miss the Netherlands’ upcoming international friendlies against Norway national football team on March 27 and Ecuador national football team on March 31.
More significantly, the setback has cast fresh doubt over Depay’s availability for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While his absence is currently projected to last around a month, any complications or delays in recovery could put his place in jeopardy, forcing Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman to consider alternative options ahead of final squad selection.
Depay’s experience and attacking quality make him a key figure for the Dutch national team, and his potential absence would represent a major setback as they prepare for the global tournament.
At club level, the former Barcelona and Lyon forward has endured a modest campaign with Corinthians so far this season, registering one goal and one assist in 12 appearances. Despite those numbers, his influence and leadership within the squad remain highly valued.
For now, both Corinthians and the Netherlands will be anxiously monitoring his recovery progress, hoping the veteran forward can return to full fitness in time to play a role in the crucial months ahead.
