Didier Drogba has praised Olympique Marseille’s 2024/25 campaign, calling it a “very good season” despite the club’s continued struggles to end a 13-year wait for silverware.
The Ivorian icon, who made his name at Marseille in the 2003/04 season, acknowledged the club’s limitations and praised their consistency in Ligue 1.
Marseille last won a major trophy in 2012 when they lifted the Coupe de la Ligue and have since fallen short across 42 competitions.
This season has brought its share of challenges—ranging from financial constraints and injuries to squad depth issues and internal tension—but the club has remained competitive.
“It’s a very good season for Olympique Marseille,” Drogba told Flashscore. “Considering the resources and the strength of Paris Saint-Germain today, I can only call it a good season. We are the second-best team in the league.”
Marseille’s coaching stability this term has also helped. While last season saw four different managers take charge, the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi in June 2024 brought some calm, with the Italian guiding the team toward Champions League qualification.
The club currently sits second in Ligue 1, battling with Monaco, Nice, and Lille for a top-three finish.
Reflecting on his emotional return to Marseille for the club’s 125th anniversary legends match, Drogba said: “Well, what you need to know is that I’ve been a Marseille fan since I was 12… It still feels like a dream for me to return.”
He also highlighted the unique connection he feels with the Stade Velodrome. “Of course, it’s the pitch. Even when I was at Olympique Marseille, it felt natural to be here.”
Marseille extended their unbeaten run to three games after a 1-1 draw with Lille on Sunday. They next face Le Havre before ending their campaign at home to Rennes on May 17.
