DR Congo World Cup plans disrupted as US imposes strict isolation protocol over Ebola concerns

With less than a month remaining before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been thrust into an unprecedented logistical and medical challenge following reported strict health measures imposed by United States authorities over Ebola concerns.

According to reports from ESPN and AFP, the White House has ordered a mandatory 21-day isolation period for the Congolese national team prior to their entry into the United States.

The decision is linked to ongoing concerns over a recent Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC, which has already recorded several confirmed cases and fatalities, prompting an international health alert from the World Health Organization.

The measures place immediate strain on the Leopards’ World Cup preparations. The squad is currently based in Belgium for a training camp but has now been required to operate under a tightly controlled sanitary bubble to limit any potential health risks ahead of their travel to North America.

Andrew Giuliani, who heads the White House World Cup task force, reportedly warned that all incoming personnel linked to the DRC delegation would be subject to separate isolation protocols. The approach, officials say, is aimed at preventing any possible contamination scenario that could disrupt the tournament or endanger public health.

Concerns within US authorities are understood to centre on the risk of a symptomatic case emerging within the squad, a situation that could potentially jeopardise the team’s participation in the global showpiece.

Despite the restrictions, the DRC is scheduled to base its World Cup camp in Houston. The team is set to face Portugal on June 17, before taking on Colombia and Uzbekistan in the group stage.

The developments come as the World Health Organization continues to monitor the Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo, where health officials are working to contain the spread amid rising international concern.
