The preliminary list of players for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) national team, known as the Leopards, in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, has been unveiled by coach Sébastien Desabre. Notable among the 45 selected players is the inclusion of former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe, marking his debut in the preselection.
The Leopards’ roster exhibits the return of seasoned players Mukoko Amale and Jonathan Bolingi, both absent from the squad since March and June, respectively.
Gaëtan Laura, the center forward plying his trade with Samsunspor in Turkey, also makes a comeback after a previous call-up in March, despite not making an appearance during that period.
However, questions arise regarding the fitness levels of these returning players, with Amale remaining without a club since the expiration of his contract with Difaâ El Jadida in Morocco.
Bolingi’s situation is equally concerning, having not participated in any official matches since September 2 due to a pulmonary infection. Laura, dealing with a recent groin injury, played her last competitive match almost a month ago.
The most eye-catching inclusion is Axel Tuanzebe, the central defender, securing his first pre-call-up to the Leopards’ squad.
Tuanzebe, known for his stint with Manchester United, notably featured in an England Under-21 match in November 2017 against Ukraine.
Despite possessing only five appearances with Ipswich Town in the English Championship, Tuanzebe’s selection sparks debates regarding his current form and fitness.
Tuanzebe’s career trajectory, marked by unsuccessful loans in both England and Italy, signifies a departure from the initial expectations set during his time with Manchester United.
Whether he secures a spot in the final list of 27 for AFCON 2023 remains uncertain. As the Leopards gear up for the tournament in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, the inclusion of Tuanzebe adds an intriguing dimension to the squad, with fans eager to witness the outcome of his potential participation.
