DR Congo international Chancel Mbemba has become a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Olympique Marseille.
The 30-year-old left-back struggled in the recently concluded season, failing to make the matchday squad following the arrival of coach Roberto De Zerbi.
Marseille opted to cash in on the defender last summer in an attempt to significantly trim their squad in the face of a high wage bill. However, the transition to a lighter squad was far from smooth in the case of Mbemba.
The French outfit placed Mbemba in the “loft”, but were unable to shift the defender from the club. The player’s relation with the club were fraught with sanctions and suspensions.
After the summer window, the club were unwilling to change their stance on Mbemba. The DR Congo star had to return to first-team training through legal means.
In the winter window, there was once again no movement with the centre-back reportedly turning down an offer from Stade Rennais, and it became clear that Mbemba would see out the remaining months of his contract at Marseille.
Having departed the club, Mbemba is expected to find himself a new club before the commencement of the new season.
