DR Congo midfield faces major overhaul as emerging talents challenge established stars

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s national team is witnessing a significant reshuffle in its midfield ranks, with a wave of emerging talent set to disrupt the longstanding hierarchy.

Leading this new generation are Afimico Pululu and Ngal’ayel Mukau, both of whom have impressed with standout performances at club level.

For years, the Leopards’ midfield has been anchored by the reliable partnership of Samuel Moutoussamy and Charles Pickel.

However, with the addition of several dynamic new players, the central core of the team is evolving rapidly, becoming one of the most competitive areas within the squad.

Pululu’s Breakout Season in Poland

Among the most talked-about names is Afimico Pululu. The former FC Basel attacker, now playing for Jagiellonia Białystok in Poland, has enjoyed a remarkable campaign.

His offensive contributions have not gone unnoticed, particularly his success in the UEFA Conference League, where he emerged as a top scorer.

Pululu’s forward thrust and creativity are pushing him to the forefront of the national team conversation.

His emergence comes at a time when Theo Bongonda’s role is in question. The winger endured a quiet season with Spartak Moscow, and uncertainty surrounding his future in Russia may impact his standing within the national setup.

Pululu’s impact has been such that he is not merely considered a substitute option but a genuine contender for a starting place.

English Influence: Maghoma and Diangana Step In

Another rising figure is Paris Maghoma, who has steadily integrated himself into Brentford’s setup in the Premier League.

At just 23, Maghoma offers a unique combination of vision, technical ability, and energy in the midfield. His development reflects a new, ambitious generation ready to challenge the status quo.

Grady Diangana, who currently plays for West Bromwich Albion in the English Championship, brings another dimension to the squad.

Known for his pace and ability to transition quickly from defence to attack, Diangana’s profile is particularly appealing to the coaching staff as they look to refresh their tactical approach.

Established Players Under Pressure

With the influx of these younger options, senior figures like Moutoussamy and Pickel are facing increased scrutiny.

Moutoussamy remains an important figure thanks to his consistency with Sivasspor in Turkey, while Pickel continues to deliver industrious performances for Cremonese in Italy’s Serie B.

Yet the competition for places has intensified, and neither can afford complacency.

Elsewhere, young talents such as Noah Sadiki of Union Saint-Gilloise and Lille’s Ngal’ayel Mukau are quickly climbing the ranks.

Their growing influence at club level is beginning to translate into confidence and tactical awareness on the international stage.

Edo Kayembe, currently at Watford, also remains a dependable option, particularly in physically demanding matches.

Selection Dilemma for Coach Desabre

This newfound depth presents both an opportunity and a challenge for head coach Sébastien Desabre. With a blend of seasoned professionals and emerging stars, Desabre must now decide how to balance experience with current form and youthful dynamism.

Each selection will carry weight as the Leopards prepare for crucial fixtures, particularly the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The battle for midfield supremacy in the DR Congo squad marks a turning point for the national team. As fresh talent continues to rise and push boundaries, the Leopards may be on the verge of entering a new era—one driven by fierce internal competition and the promise of a more dynamic and versatile midfield.
