DR Congo defender Arthur Masuaku returns to Sunderland after RC Lens loan spell
DR Congo international Arthur Masuaku is set to continue his career with Sunderland after the conclusion of his loan spell with French side RC Lens.
The experienced left-back was not retained by Lens following the expiration of his temporary deal, which officially comes to an end on 30 June. Masuaku now returns to Sunderland, where he remains under contract until 2027.
Masuaku joined Lens in search of regular playing time and added experience to the squad during the 2025–2026 campaign. However, his stay in France proved difficult, with the Congolese defender making only four Ligue 1 appearances throughout the season.
Despite arriving with valuable experience from English football and international competitions, Masuaku struggled to cement a regular starting place in the Lens squad. Injuries, competition for places and tactical preferences limited his involvement during the campaign.
The return to Sunderland now presents the defender with another opportunity to revive his career ahead of the new Premier League season. Sunderland are expected to assess their squad options during pre-season before making a final decision regarding Masuaku’s role in the team moving forward.
Masuaku’s experience could still prove valuable for the English club, especially with the demands of competing in the Premier League. The 32-year-old brings versatility, attacking quality from wide areas and strong international pedigree after years of representing DR Congo on the continental stage.
For Lens, the decision not to extend the defender’s stay forms part of the club’s preparations for the upcoming campaign as they continue restructuring their squad during the summer transfer window.
Masuaku will now focus on returning to England and preparing for pre-season with Sunderland as he looks to fight for his place and regain consistent playing time at club level.
