The Democratic Republic of Congo’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a significant setback after their scheduled friendly match against Chile was cancelled due to concerns surrounding the Ebola outbreak in the African nation.

The match, which was set to take place on June 9 in southern Spain, was called off following an official decision by Juan Franco, the mayor of La Línea de la Concepción.

Spanish Authorities Cite Public Health Risks

Franco announced that he had signed a decree cancelling the fixture as an urgent precautionary measure aimed at protecting public health.

According to the mayor, the decision was taken in line with recommendations and medical reports provided by the Andalusian regional health authorities, which raised concerns about the potential risks associated with hosting the match amid the ongoing Ebola situation in DR Congo.

The cancellation represents another obstacle for the Congolese national team as it seeks to complete its preparations ahead of football’s biggest tournament.

World Cup Plans Disrupted

The health crisis has already had a major impact on the Leopards’ preparations. Several training activities and friendly matches have reportedly been affected, forcing the coaching staff to adjust plans at a crucial stage before the World Cup.

Head coach Sebastien Desabre and his squad are now facing a race against time to ensure the team remains fully prepared despite the disruptions.

The situation has also complicated travel arrangements for the delegation ahead of the tournament in North America.

Strict Entry Measures Imposed

Reports indicate that the United States introduced strict health requirements for the Congolese delegation, including a 21-day medical isolation bubble before entry into the country could be approved.

The measures were reportedly designed to minimise any potential risk associated with the Ebola outbreak.

As a result, the Congolese Football Federation was forced to alter its plans, cancelling a training camp that had been scheduled in Kinshasa and relocating the delegation directly to Belgium.

Officials believe the move will help avoid additional complications that could affect the team’s participation in the World Cup.

Focus Turns to Denmark Friendly

Despite the latest setback, DR Congo are still scheduled to face Denmark in a friendly match in Liège, Belgium, on Wednesday.

The encounter is expected to play an important role in the team’s final physical and tactical preparations before the start of the tournament.

Tough World Cup Challenge Ahead

The Leopards will begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in a challenging group featuring Colombia, Portugal and Uzbekistan.

With the tournament set to be hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada, Desabre’s side will be hoping to overcome their difficult preparations and make a strong impression on the world stage.
