Dortmund unlikely to extend Ramy Bensebaini’s contract after ongoing season

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly unlikely to extend the contracts of Algeria international Ramy Bensebaini and Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer beyond their current deals, according to Sport Bild via Goal.

Both players are contracted to the Bundesliga club until the summer of 2027, but Dortmund are said to have no plans to offer either man a new agreement.

The reported decision forms part of the club’s wider strategy of prioritising younger players with greater potential for future development and resale value.

Sabitzer’s playing time under threat

Sabitzer’s prospects at Dortmund have reportedly declined after he lost his regular starting position last season.

The Austrian’s situation could become even more difficult following the arrival of Joey Veerman, with increased competition expected to further limit his opportunities.

According to Sport Bild, an extension for Sabitzer is “currently ruled out internally”.

The midfielder would therefore be expected to leave Dortmund as a free agent when his current contract expires in 2027.

Bensebaini also facing exit

Bensebaini’s situation is similar despite the Algeria international enjoying a more prominent role under head coach Niko Kovac.

The 31-year-old has been used more regularly than Sabitzer, but Dortmund are reportedly still not planning to offer him a contract extension.

That would leave the Algerian facing a potential departure at the end of his current deal.

Dortmund focus on younger talent

Dortmund’s reported decision reflects the recruitment strategy they followed during the latest transfer window.

The club are increasingly looking towards younger, promising players who can develop within the squad and potentially generate significant transfer fees in the future.

Unless there is a change in direction, both Bensebaini and Sabitzer could leave Dortmund on free transfers when their contracts expire in 2027.
