‘Doesn’t look good’ – Newcastle coach delivers worrying Anthony Elanga injury update

Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle has admitted Anthony Elanga’s injury “doesn’t look that good” after the winger missed Monday’s 4-1 Premier League defeat to Leeds United.

Elanga was ruled out shortly before kick-off with a leg problem after making a strong start to the new campaign.

The 24-year-old had failed to score in the Premier League last season but has already found the net twice this term, making his absence a significant blow for Newcastle.

The Sweden international is now set to undergo an MRI scan to determine the extent of the injury and how long he could be sidelined.

Jaissle offered little encouragement when asked about Elanga’s condition after Newcastle’s heavy defeat at Elland Road.

“Probably you know that. Or you can actually assume (injury),” he said.

“Other than that there would have been no reason. So we hope that when the further investigations, with pictures, with the MRI, that it’s getting more clearer, but for now it doesn’t look that good.”

More injury concerns for Jaissle

Elanga’s injury adds to a difficult night for Newcastle, who were comfortably beaten by Leeds after conceding four goals.

The Magpies were already dealing with fitness concerns before the match, with Jacob Ramsey suffering an injury during the warm-up.

Ramsey’s setback forced Newcastle to make a late adjustment before kick-off, further reducing Jaissle’s options.

The situation worsened during the match when Nico Gonzalez was forced off in the early stages after picking up an injury.

Newcastle must now await further medical assessments on all three players, with Elanga’s condition appearing to be the biggest immediate concern.

His early-season form had made him an important attacking outlet, and another prolonged absence would leave Jaissle facing a difficult selection problem.

The defeat at Leeds also leaves Newcastle with questions to answer after a performance in which they struggled to contain their opponents.

Jaissle will hope the MRI scan provides a more positive assessment of Elanga’s condition, although his initial comments suggest the club could be facing another spell without one of their key attacking players.
