Real Madrid legend Guti has criticised Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal for his appearance while on international duty with Spain, questioning the youngster’s professionalism.
Yamal, who is of Equatorial Guineanyamal and Moroccan descent, has drawn widespread attention for his precocious talent and composure at senior level.
However, his style off the pitch has not impressed everyone, with Guti taking issue with his attire during Spain’s recent UEFA Nations League final against Portugal.
Speaking on El Chiringuito, the former midfielder said: “I don’t know if this is the first time I’ve seen a guy with a cap backward. I don’t like that!” Guti continued: “Why? Because he’s with the Spanish national team!”
Guti, known in his own playing days for a flamboyant image, argued that appearances matter when representing one’s country on such a stage.
“When he goes to Ibiza, or wherever he wants, he can do it. But not with the Spanish national team at a press conference. I don’t like it,” he added.
Guti stressed that the responsibility lies not only with the 17-year-old forward but also with those managing him.
“This is the reality. And it’s not his fault. It’s the fault of the people standing next to him who don’t say ‘no way’.”
When reminded of his own bold fashion choices as a player, Guti offered a tongue-in-cheek response: “I’ve become old…”
Yamal, widely regarded as one of the most promising talents in Spanish football, seems to have publicly responded to the remarks, posting a photo on Instagram of its the cup backward.
Despite the criticism, he remains central to Spain’s plans heading into future international fixtures, with his on-field ability continuing to outshine any off-field controversies.
