Djene Dakonam, who has been free since the end of his contract with Coton Sport de Garoua in Cameroon, is on the verge of making a return to European football. The Togolese international is currently on trial at Racing Club de Lens, a Ligue 2 club in France owned by the wealthy Azeri Hafiz Mamadov and coached by Antoine Kombouaré (former PSG manager).
During his week-long stay in France, Dakonam has been showcasing his versatility, capable of playing in defense on both the right and left sides. He has been training with the CFA des Sang et Or, impressing keen observers of the French club. Dakonam is also a nominee for the “best Togolese player playing in Africa” award at the upcoming Togo Football Awards.
If the trial proves successful, Dakonam could secure a contract with Racing Club de Lens as early as January. The club, currently sitting in the 2nd position in the Ligue 2 standings, seems poised to reinforce its squad with the addition of the Togolese international. On the international stage, Dakonam was part of the Togo national team, the Eperviers, which reached the quarterfinals of the last Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
