Djed Spence set for Inter Milan debut after two-month absence

Inter Milan manager Cristian Chivu has confirmed that Djed Spence is available for selection ahead of this weekend’s Serie A fixture, raising hopes that the England international will finally make his debut following his summer move from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 26-year-old joined the Italian giants on August 15 in a £30 million deal, signing a contract that runs until June 30, 2031.

However, Spence has yet to feature for Inter as he completed a lengthy rehabilitation programme following a reported physical issue. His absence has delayed the start of his career in Italy, but Chivu says the defender has returned to full training and is ready to contribute.

Inter have been seeking a solution at right-back following Denzel Dumfries’ departure to Real Madrid, making Spence’s availability a timely boost as the club look to strengthen their options on the right flank.

Chivu confirms Spence is ready

Speaking to the media on Friday, Chivu revealed that Spence had completed a full week of training without restrictions and could be included in the squad for the weekend fixture.

“Djed has been training with us for a week,” Chivu said Friday. “He’s been following the team’s programme since Monday, without restrictions or any other issues, and he’s completed five good training sessions.

“We mustn’t forget his rehabilitation period and the holiday he had after the World Cup. He’s been away from the pitch for two months.

“Now he’s available and will be in the squad. We’re delighted to have him back. We’re finally seeing his smile again and getting to see his qualities.”

The manager’s comments suggest Inter are satisfied with Spence’s progress after his extended spell away from competitive football.

Although his inclusion in the squad does not guarantee an immediate starting role, the defender now has an opportunity to begin establishing himself within Chivu’s plans.

Tottenham success raises expectations

Spence arrives in Milan with valuable European experience after helping Tottenham win the Europa League in May 2025.

Despite recording no goals or assists last season, his pace, defensive work rate and ability to operate on the right side made him an important option for club and country.

His performances for England at the World Cup further enhanced his reputation and attracted interest from Inter, who identified him as a potential solution to their needs on the right flank.

The Italian side will now hope he can translate those qualities into consistent performances in Serie A.

Spence’s ability to provide defensive solidity while supporting attacks could prove valuable as Inter look to maintain their competitiveness across domestic and European competitions.

Inter await English trio combination

Spence is also part of an intriguing English contingent assembled by Inter during the summer transfer window, alongside John Stones and Curtis Jones.

However, the trio are yet to feature together for the Italian club, leaving supporters waiting to see how the English recruits could combine on the pitch.

Spence’s return to availability represents the first step towards that possibility, although his immediate priority will be earning minutes and adapting to Chivu’s tactical demands.

After weeks of rehabilitation and individual preparation, the defender is finally approaching the moment Inter supporters have been waiting for.

His potential debut this weekend will offer the club its first opportunity to assess how he fits into their defensive structure and whether he can provide the long-term answer on the right flank.
