Djamel Belmadi weighs return to coaching after year-long hiatus

Djamel Belmadi appointed head coach of Al Duhail

Djamel Belmadi is considering a return to management, a year after stepping down as Algeria’s head coach.

The 48-year-old is reportedly in talks with multiple clubs, including a top Qatari side, as he evaluates his next move.

Belmadi, who has extensive experience in Qatari football, previously managed Al-Duhail twice, winning multiple domestic titles.

He also led Qatar’s national team to Gulf Cup and West Asian Championship victories in 2014 before taking charge of Algeria in 2018.

His tenure with the Desert Foxes was highlighted by the 2019 AFCON triumph, but later disappointments—including Algeria’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup—led to his departure in early 2024.

Since then, he has turned down offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE, as well as a proposal from Al-Rayyan.

Following a personal loss, Belmadi is cautious about returning mid-season but remains open to the right opportunity.

If he accepts a new role, it would mark a return to familiar territory where he has already made a lasting impact.
