Former Nigerian international Dimeji Lawal has criticised those questioning Eric Chelle’s decision to recall Ahmed Musa to the Super Eagles squad following his inclusion in the 39-man list.
Lawal, who was part of Nigeria’s silver medal-winning team at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Canada, expressed disappointment over the confusion surrounding Chelle’s explanation for Musa’s selection.
He urged the Franco-Malian coach to clarify whether the veteran forward was invited to play or to serve as a motivational figure within the squad.
“We first read that Ahmed Musa was invited, but later we heard that the coach denied it. He said that he did not invite Ahmed Musa to play, but rather as a senior member of the team to boost the morale of the players.
“Anyway, what we are looking for are the best players at this particular moment. In all honesty, if you look at Ahmed Musa’s performances in the championship, you will see that he deserves to be called up. That is my opinion,” Lawal stated.
Musa, a former CSKA Moscow striker, currently plays in Nigeria’s domestic league and has been the subject of debate regarding his continued inclusion in the national team. Lawal defended the 31-year-old, criticising the tendency to undermine local league players.
“Ahmed Musa deserves his inclusion; unless you want to tell me that Nigeria is no longer on the world football map. Why is everything about local players systematically dismissed? People criticize them easily. Ahmed Musa does not play abroad. He plays in the local league, and he plays very well. I think that is enough for him to be called up,” Lawal insisted.
The controversy has sparked broader discussions on the role of experienced players in the national team and the importance of local-based footballers in Nigeria’s squad selection.
