Drogba Set for Potential Chelsea Return Against Burnley
Didier Drogba could make his long-awaited return in Chelsea colours as early as Monday, with manager José Mourinho hinting the Ivorian may feature in the Premier League opener against Burnley.
The 36-year-old striker, who rejoined the Blues this summer, has been recovering from an ankle injury sustained during a pre-season friendly around ten days ago. While the injury initially raised concerns, Mourinho provided an optimistic update during a press conference, suggesting Drogba’s recovery is ahead of schedule.
“I think he can play on Monday. I can’t guarantee it, but normally I think he can,” the Chelsea boss told the club’s official website.
Drogba, who wore the number 11 shirt during his highly successful first spell at Stamford Bridge, could now don the same number once again in competitive action. The former Galatasaray forward had previously downplayed the severity of his injury, stating, “I twisted my ankle and couldn’t continue. In the next few days, I’ll get treatment and I hope everything goes well.”
Chelsea will face newly promoted Burnley in the delayed Matchday 1 fixture, and the possibility of Drogba’s return will add to the excitement for Blues fans eager to see one of the club’s modern icons back on the pitch.
